Juan Olivarez is stepping down as President of Grand Rapids Community College after nine years. The announcement was made on Thursday, March 20. The Collegiate has put together a special on-line section to cover his life, his career and his plans for the future.

"If you haven’t heard by now, Juan Olivarez is stepping down from his post as President of Grand Rapids Community College after nine years of service. During his time here, Olivarez was extremely influential. Under his leadership the college grew to new heights and a record number of enrolled students. New programs were formed, new alliances created. Olivarez helped to work to foster relationships with neighboring universities, including Kettering University and Ferris State University. Adios Sr. Olivarez
"GRCC’s president Juan Olivarez announced his resignation after nine years of service to the college. Olivarez, 58, is leaving on July 1 to lead the Kalamazoo Community Foundation as their new president and CEO. Olivarez said he “feels ready to try on a new challenge.” He said he feels like the college is in a good place even though the mileages didn’t pass, and nothing pressing is going on at the college at this time. The opportunity came forward, I’ve had other opportunities but it wasn’t the right time,” Olivarez said....."

Local students showcase talent
"A movement of local dancers, poets, singers, and musicians united at the Wealthy Theater to show off their talent. The “Just Showing Off” showcase was benefit to aid in funding for the Milwaukee, WI “So You Think You Can Dance” auditions. Dancer and GRCC student, Yessenia Gomez constructed and directed benefit March 16. Besides raising money, the display hoped to capture the audience with a range of talent...."(Continue reading)

Raider baseball warms up
"Spring Break for most GRCC students was a break from homework and testing, but the GRCC baseball team was testing their ability against D1 colleges in Florida. Despite posting a 1-12 record, the team does not take the wins and loses from a mental aspect, but as a learning experience and time to get ready for the season. “We could have won about six or seven of our games if a few plays had gone our way,” second baseman Derek Jones said...."
